Step into your Power…{Marketing for Photographers}

It’s great to know that on occasion I inspire people. Inspire them, maybe, to pick up a camera for the first time.  Or to try something new in their work,  as one of my readers has recently told me. And, hopefully, I will inspire some of you to book a portrait session with me, knowing that I will deliver you not only some wonderful, authentic shots but a great experience to boot.

But inspiration comes in many forms. I have been Twitter friends with marketing supremo Kim O’Rourke for a little while, and suggested to her that she might like to write about the fear and doubt induced by the need to promote and market oneself, and waved my hand towards her as a possible case study. I am not a good self blowing trumpeter, and I love it when you good folks spread the word on my behalf; word of mouth is, after all, the best advertisement. However I realise that I need to stop hiding behind the parapet and learn to blow that trumpet a little louder. Kim wrote the following in her recent newsletter, and as i read it, it’s like she’s sitting right next to me, giving me a nudge.  The following words mean the world to me, and I hope you get something from them too.

Are you scared of promoting yourself?
One of my mentors said a phrase recently that I hadn’t heard before.  And that was “Step into your power”.  It was one of those big “Ah-ha” moments, when a few things become suddenly very crystal clear.

When I’m mentoring my personal clients, I spend a fair proportion of time looking at their mindset, and opening their minds to the vast possibilities that their skills and passions allow them to do.  If only they’d let themselves.

Everybody (and, yes, that includes you), has a special something to offer the world.  Or rather, a special something to offer a particular group of people who only want you.

And if you hide your light under a bushel, then you are not allowing them to make their lives better through using your services.  That means you’re denying someone else the chance for happiness.

Take Maryanne for instance (sorry Maryanne!).  Her shots are stunning.  If I were her, I’d be singing my talents from the roof tops!  She has the ability to capture that special something in someone, and to make a person look stunning.  So, she’s not just taking photos, she’s capturing the true essence of someone, showing them at their absolute best.  And when people are shown at their absolute best, they become very happy!  What a skill to have! (way to go Maryanne!).

If you have worked out your true niche in life, then believe me, you will step into your power with confidence, and be able to promote your services with complete authenticity and self assuredness that comes with knowing that you are offering exactly the right kind of thing to the right kind of people.

The fear of promoting yourself will be gone in an instant…rather, it gets replaced with an excitement of how many people you can make a difference to each day.  And that’s gotta be worth getting up for?!

But…don’t rush.  It can take a little time to get your niche right, and for it to then settle in to the right place for you.  And you may find that over time, it shifts and changes course naturally.  That’s perfectly OK.  As you grow as a person, and your skills and talents become more refined and more aligned with your perfect clients and customers, you’ll find that you grow more in confidence and offer even more of the uniqueness of you to your clients. Allow that process to happen naturally over time.

A river starts as a trickle, then a stream.  The stream flows into the river which becomes larger and larger before joining the sea.  Along the way it meanders, goes round obstacles; cuts through things in its way; picks up debris…and then drops it again; allows us humans to play in it, wash in it, learn from it, travel on it and even have the courage to surf on it in some cases.  And eventually it reaches the sea, and becomes the ocean in all it glory, beauty and power.

At no time does it stop to think about whether it should or shouldn’t. Whether it can or can’t.  Or whether it’s allowed or not.  For these are often the thoughts that are holding us back from promoting our business to the fullest.  They prevent us from stepping into our glory, beauty and power.  And those same thoughts deny all those people (our clients) the chance to have fun with us, learn with us, be themselves with us, and travel to their own destinations with us.

So, as we hurtle towards the last third of the year, are you going to remain a trickle where no-one can see you…or are you going to promote your business and allow yourself to step into your power, and in doing so allow your customers to step into theirs?

Trust in yourself, stick a large smile on your face, and go for it!

Have a great week!
Kim.

The photos are of my precious boys, who are a constant inspiration to me. Ach, I love these photos, and they are soon to be made into B I G prints for my wall.:)))

Lastly, don’t forget to drop in a comment below. I love comments. They make me feel loved, and that might make me blow the trumpet  a little harder. OK enough brass band metaphors already….

Thank you for sharing that Maz. :-) What you wrote feels very true, even though it’s hard to appreciate it at times…..

Beautiful post, very inspiring!! And such great words from Kim! Thanks for sharing this. I think the hard part for me right now is that I’m in such early stages, that it’s hard to tell where I fit in or what my niche is, but as Kim says, it’s important to just trust that with time, it will come and to always believe in yourself and have that faith.

Thanks for sharing this Maz. I’ve been taking photographs and in business for longer than I care to remember but words like these (from both of you) come to me like a breath of fresh air – how much inspiration can a man take in one week?

A girl called Alice {Chepstow Child Photography}

I had the huge compliment recently of being invited back by a happy customer. How to make a photographer smile- invite her back for more! I took photos of Eve’s 13th birthday a few weeks ago and this time it was Alice’s turn; lovely for me, these are two of the nicest girls I could wish to spend the afternoon with. Chaaaaarming!  And fairly  giggly, which is fine by me, as I love the infectiousness of a girly giggle.

It was a dingy old day, one of those days that makes you feel like you’re inside a tupperware box, all grey and damp overhead; then someone took the lid off and the wind blew up which made for some atmospheric hair-across- the -face shots- which seem to be a speciality of mine this summer!

Dasha - August 31, 2010 - 8:58 am

I love them all! And the second one is my favourite! Love love love!

Claire Darcy-Bowen. {Portrait Photographer, Cardiff}

Claire contacted me a while ago for some shots to put on her website (currently in production) to help her promote her career as an opera singer and an actress. Although due to both our work commitments we had to wait a while before we could schedule the shoot, I had a feeling it was going to be well worth the wait; and boy, was it ever!. The whole shoot had the feeling of ‘rightness’ about it; right time, right place, right client, and , dare I say it, right photographer? Claire and I , though we’d never met, had corresponded by email and when we did meet it was a very happy union. Claire’s mum Judith came along to carry bags, hold the reflector, help with frock changing and generally offer support and the three of us had a wonderful day. Dyffryn Gardens very kindly allowed us the run of their stunning gardens, which even this late in the summer were packed with floriferous colour. We had some fun with different costumes and outfits, and Claire made my job a breeze with her warm, sensitive approach. A beautiful soul with oodles of talent, she is one to watch, I am sure. Good luck Claire, with everything you do!

(* PS, for my readers in the wedding ‘industry’, Claire is available to sing at weddings; pass the word around!)

Claire Darcy-Bowen - August 19, 2010 - 4:39 am

Maryanne,

These pictures are incredible, they’re everything I could have wished for and more! You are such a joy to work with and you made me feel completely at ease from the moment I met you. When we exchanged emails, I gave you my thoughts on the kind of images I was looking for and the attention you paid to them was spot on. I couldn’t have asked for a better photographer to work with! I know my mum thoroughly enjoyed the day too :) It was a great partnership and I look forward to the time when we work together again! I jumped around like a bit of a lunatic when I saw these pictures. Thank you so so much!! xxxxx

Maz, there are only so many instances when one can refer to another as ‘fantastic’ without the compliment sounding hackneyed and trite.

Humour me, then.

Constantly you surprise and push away boundaries. This collection is sublime. You find beauty in everything you shoot. This enamours me of your work.

Please continue. Spellbinding.

Even when it rains, it shines… {Teen Portrait Photography, Chepstow}

It is such a lottery; this weather thing. Caz specifically booked her shoot for the ‘Golden Hour’, in hope that she and her friends (together to celebrate her 13th Birthday) could bathe in the syrupy glow of a late summer evening. Well, there wasn’t much golden about it- apart from the lovely memories we all have of our evening together! So, it was dark and not a little chilly, so we cranked up the music and decided we would stop at nothing to inject some colour of our own. And, by golly, I think we did it! These images have an almost Swallows and Amazons feel to them I think (although these guys are no John, Susan, Titty and Roger, far too Generation Y for that! ) Caz, I hope you like the pics. Thankyou for giving it your all, and making it such a fun night:)

Amongst the ruins-Piercefield House {Family Portraits – Chepstow}

We are so lucky round here to have a wealth of natural, verdant backdrops and quirky locations to enjoy our portrait sessions in. Why would I want to shoot in a studio when I have all this at my doorstep? Although, when it rains (as it is forecast this evening; shoot booked for 6pm, oh dear…..) we do obviously need to dive for cover, and that is why I have taken steps to find myself a little natural light studio- but more of that anon….

But happily for Niamh and Tabby’s shoot we had perfect late afternoon sun and some lovely white characterful clouds which made for some great sky shots. Our location was amongst the sheep populated and heavily thistled Piercefield Park, next to Chepstow Racecourse. The Mansion is sadly a ruin- although maybe not sadly, because I love a good ruin and it does make a good location for a photoshoot!. (It is for sale, by the way, for £2,000,000 if you fancy a challenge….)

Niamh and Tabby were accepting of all challenges I threw at then (my sessions are very interactive:)) which involved climbing, sheep whispering, cross country jumping and thistle dodging…. and we had such a great session. So.Much.Fun; see for yourselves;

Such unique photos.! Great to see the girls enjoying each others company..!

Dave Thackeray - August 17, 2010 - 5:02 am

Hey Maz – work well done here.

I gotta throw this in, though. I’m losing some sharpness in the majority of these images. I get it, totally, on 004, 011 and 012 – but otherwise I’m feeling some focus mishaps.

As a snapper myself I get this all the time. I’m nowhere close to your incredibleness but I think the sense of the lens not performing to expectation jars us whatever our level of expertise.

These images really, really made me happy, though. You seem to pick the perfect models to match your mood and the environments they are captured in.

A true talent, you is!

Maryanne - August 17, 2010 - 9:30 am

Thanks Dave. It’s a fair cop. That’s me trying to be clever and resize in WordPress …it’s actually the portrait aspect images that don’t have the sharpness, as I have increased the size to fill the width of the blog.(You can tell by the poor definition of the watermark.) Happily the originals are sharp as a …whatever…
